"Serving guests from around the world since 1906, the Greenpoint YMCA Residence and Guest Rooms offer 100 inexpensive rooms. Located on the riverfront of Brooklyn, the Greenpoint Y has a great view of New York City, with close proximity to many tourist attractions. Whether your visit brings you for a weekend or a few weeks, you'll enjoy our friendly and courteous service, deluxe rooms with 19"" TV, radio with alarm clock and personalized voice mail access. Families love our indoor swimming pool with male and female saunas, daily housekeeping service, and state-of-the-art Fitness Center. The Greenpoint Y is accessible by local buses, and the G and L subway lines.
Long known as an immigrant neighborhood, our community was founded in 1645 by Dutch ship carpenter Dick Volckertsen. Greenpoint became an industrial center during the 1830's - located at the confluence of Newtown Creek and the East River, the area was ideal for shipbuilding. The warship ""Monitor"", of Civil War fame, was built here by John Ericsson and launched on January 30, 1862. Greenpoint was eventually incorporated into the growing city of Brooklyn, which joined New York City in the late nineteenth century.
Greenpoint was also home to A.C. Kingsland, a former mayor of New York City. Kingsland gave the town eight acres of land, which were Winthrop Park, after the town elder.
Contemporary Greenpoint is still a lively immigrant community, 80% of whom are Polish immigrants or their descendants. Greenpoint also boasts the second largest artist community in New York City, as well as the lowest reported crime rate; the ""Northside"" has become home to chic restaurants and cafes. This hotel is fit for the budget-minded traveler."
